Shocker: Bomb found on Air India aircraft earmarked for PM Narendra Modi

In a security scare, a defused bomb was found last night in the business class of an Air India jumbo aircraft which was kept as a standby for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent US visit.
The discovery of the bomb uncovered a major security lapse within the Indian establishment tasked with protecting the top ring of the government.
The grenade was found by the Air India crew on board the Boeing 747-400 which was operating the Mumbai-Hyderabad-Jeddah flight, airline sources said today.
On landing at Jeddah, the incident was reported to the local security agencies who took over the aircraft, the sources said.
The aircraft, which has been cleared and released by Jeddah airport security, is still in the city as Indian security personnel were investigating the matter. The plane is likely to return to Calicut soon.
The aircraft had been kept as a standby for the recent US visit of Modi. The Prime Minister had undertaken a five-day visit to the US from September 25.
An Air India executive said that it was the "plastic casing" of a shell of a stun grenade used by security during the anti terror drills carried out in the plane and that it was "completely harmless". The airline is carrying out its investigations.
"A suspicious object was found on board this aircraft. The investigations are on," an Air India Spokesperson said.

India creates history as Isro successfully inserts Mangalyaan into Mars orbit
India has successfully put a satellite into orbit around Mars, becoming the fourth country to do so.
The Mangalyaan robotic probe, one of the cheapest interplanetary missions ever, will soon begin work studying the Red Planet’s atmosphere.
A 24-minute engine burn slowed the probe down enough to allow it to be captured by Mars’ gravity.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the country had achieved the “near impossible”.
Speaking at the mission control centre in the southern city of Bangalore he said: “The odds were stacked against us. Of 51 missions attempted in world only 21 have succeeded. We have prevailed.”
Only the US, Europe and Russia have previously sent missions to Mars, but India is the first country to succeed on its first attempt.
The latest US satellite, Maven, arrived at Mars on Monday.
US space agency Nasa congratulated its Indian counterpart, the Indian Space and Research Organization (Isro), on Wednesday’s success.

Red signals from India, Singapore to Hambantota’s bunkering dream

Posted by Unknown on Saturday, September 20, 2014 | 0 comments | Leave a comment...

It has been revealed that Sri Lanka’s bunkering services to ships and supply of aviation fuel to aircraft have weakened due to the heavy competition in this sector from India and Singapore.
While releasing latest data in this regard the Central Bank of Sri Lanka says though the charges in this sector are high both these sectors had shown a decline last July.
Due to this reason, Sri Lanka’s petroleum products exports in July 2014 has decreased by 6.6 percent and earned a profit of USD 28.3 million compared to the same period last year.
While Sri Lanka considers that there are great opportunities to develop the ship bunkering industry at Hambantota, a new fuel tank system too was declared open last June.
There are 14 fuel tanks in this system eight among these are being used by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority for ship bunkering. Three have been obtained on lease by the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation to supply aviation fuel for aircraft.
Hence, it is crucial that Sri Lanka provides a very cost effective service in this industry due to the stiff competition by India and Singapore.

Nurse who tended to Delhi’s gang-rape victim has also been gang-raped

Nurse who tended to Delhi’s gang-rape victim has also been gang-raped
A nurse who is said to have attended to the December 16 Delhi gang-rape victim has allegedly become a victim of sexual assault herself.
The incident reportedly took place at Budhlada in Punjab’s Mansa district on the intervening night of September 8-9.
According to the police, the Delhi-based nurse was called by one of the rape accused, Balwinder Kala, 32, on the pretext of helping his sister-in-law Ramandeep Kaur, whom she knew.
The other accused has been identified as 28-year-old Lakhwinder.
Assistant Sub-inspector Balwinder Singh said: “Balwinder Kala on Sunday contacted the nurse that Kaur was not well and wanted to meet her. She reached Budhlada by train on Monday around 7pm. It was already dark and the accused took her on his scooter to a field near the village.
“Lakhwinder joined him and they gang-raped her throughout the night.
“Balwinder dropped the victim at the railway station on the same scooter on Tuesday morning. Showing presence of mind, she managed to snatch the scooter’s keys and raised alarm.”
The accused fled from the spot, after which the victim reached the Budlada police station and narrated her ordeal to the police.
Both Balwinder and Lakhwinder have been arrested, and a local court sent the duo to two-day police custody on September 10.
The victim works as a staff nurse at a Delhi hospital, the police said.
She is said to have met Kaur around 25 days ago while returning from work at a bus stop in Delhi. Taking pity on Kaur’s distraught condition, the nurse had given her shelter for three days.
Kaur told the nurse that she had left her husband and in-laws after an argument with him.
After three days, Kaur informed her in-laws that she was in Delhi. A relative of Kaur’s husband, Balwinder Kala, was sent to Delhi to bring her back. It was during this encounter that Balwinder exchanged phone numbers with the nurse.

Groundbreaking Fashion Shoot: Acid-attack beauties come out of hiding (Photos)

Groundbreaking Fashion Shoot: Acid-attack beauties come out of hiding (Photos)
It was a photo shoot that caught India’s attention.
Five courageous survivors of acid attacks posed for portraits.
In a country where victims of such attacks do not dare to come out of hiding, or show their disfigured faces in public, this was a “ground breaking” photo shoot, participants said.
“After the acid attack I never took photos,” Rupa, one of the models and a survivor said.
“When the photos got circulated in the media, people started calling to inquire about me, I felt so good. After the photo shoot I want to go out meet more people.”
Ritu (pictured) was just 17 when she was attacked.
Ritu (pictured) was just 17 when she was attacked.
57
Rupa, now 22, was 15 years old when she was attacked by her stepmother following a dispute about money.
“That night, after acid was poured on my face, I could not see anything. I could not open my eyes, I was screaming,” she said. “But no one came to help me. My stepmother watched me suffering.”
After that night, everything changed.
“My studies stopped, I stopped playing.”
It was only three years after the acid attack that Rupa gathered enough courage to look at her face in the mirror.
It was her childhood dream, to be a designer and Rupa designed the outfits for all the models featured on the photo shoot including herself.
The photos were first published on Facebook page run by Stop Acid Attacks, an organization raising awareness about the plight of acid attack victims but have since been featured extensively across the world.
3
Ritu (L) and Laxmi live in Chavvn, one of the few shelters for acid attack survivors in India.
9
Laxmi wants other acid attack survivors to come out of isolation.
Her next step is to open a boutique. Currently she is living in Chhanv, a rehabilitation center for acid attack victims opened by the charity.
In 2013, the Indian Supreme Court passed laws aiming to control over-the-counter sales of acid.
But the implementation has been poor though, said Alok Dixit, founder of Stop Acid Attacks.
“Yes, the law is on paper, but you can find acid easily in local markets,” he said.
According to the group, more than 200 acid attack cases have been reported since January 2013.
But activists including Alok believe the real number is much higher.
Lacking support from family and society, many victims do not report attacks to the police.
Fearing social stigma, many do not even show their face in public.
And that is what the group wanted the photo shoot to change.
“We want the acid attack survivors to come out of hiding and tell their stories. It is okay to show your face,” Alok said.
Rahul Saharan, a professional photographer, was the man behind the camera.
He wanted to showcase Rupa’s designs and help her motivate other fellow acid attack survivors across the world.
His second goal: make the victims feel beautiful and change the way people define “beauty” in general.
“In our society, there are lots of things said to the girls — you are not beautiful, you won’t get married because your skin is not white and fair,” Rahul said.
“I want to change the perception of beauty — tell people that the real beauty is not about having a fair skin.
“When you see pictures used in commercials, you just see and forget them after sometime, but when you see these pictures, you feel in love with them. You want to look at them again and again.”
Ritu, another acid attack victim and a participant of the photo shoot, was 17 when acid was thrown at her face. She is 19 now and going through treatment. She cannot see with her left eye.
“Every acid attack survivor says they do not want to meet the attackers,” she said.
“But I want to meet the guy (who did this to me) and ask: ‘was it worth it?’”
6
Chanchal, along with her sister Sonam, were attacked after they protested when a group of boys were teasing them.

Two sisters from Maharashtra may become the first women to be hanged in India

Posted by Unknown on Thursday, August 14, 2014 | 0 comments | Leave a comment...

Two Maharashtra women, who were sentenced to death in 2001 for kidnapping 13 children and killing nine of them, may become the first women ever to be hanged in India.
President Pranab Mukherjee late last month rejected Renuka Kiran Shinde and her sister Seema Mohan Gavit’s mercy petitions. The buffer period before their hanging – time taken by the state home department to inform all concerned after receiving the note from Rashtrapati Bhavan – ends on Saturday.
The number of people executed in India since Independence is a matter of dispute. Government statistics claim that only 52 people have been executed since independence. However, research by the People’s Union for Civil Liberties indicates that the actual number of executions is in fact much higher, as they have located records of 1,422 executions in the decade from 1953 to 1963 alone. However, there is no record of any woman’s execution.
Renuka and Seema, who partnered their mother Anjanabai Gavit to kidnap the kids and push them into begging and killed some of them after they stopped being productive, are currently lodged at the Yerwada jail in Pune.  Anjanabai passed away during the trial, and the sisters’ father Kiran Shinde turned approver and was acquitted.
The President has also rejected the mercy petition of Rajendra Wasnik, who was sentenced to death for raping and killing a three-year-old in Amravati in March 2007. Wasnik had lured the girl with the promise of buying her biscuits before sexually assaulting and eventually killing her.

Microsoft to have data centre in India

Posted by Unknown on Wednesday, August 6, 2014 | 0 comments | Leave a comment...

BANGALORE: Microsoft is looking at establishing a data centre in India that would allow it to offer its cloud solutions more seamlessly to Indian businesses, and especially to the banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI) sector.

BFSI is the biggest consumer of technology worldwide, but governments, including the Indian government, mandate that banking data should not go out of the geographical boundary of the respective country. Concerns around this have risen since US whistleblower Edward Snowden disclosed the extent of US spying on the rest of the world.

Microsoft CIO Jim Dubois said on a visit to Bangalore on Tuesday that the company was considering the move, but declined to share details. "We are considering a data centre in India. It will help us accelerate. There are a lot of companies that are looking at us now in anticipation that Microsoft will at some point have a local data centre," he said.

Nearly 45,000 Indians in Ebola-hit countries, may bring virus home

Posted by Unknown on | 0 comments | Leave a comment...

NEW DELHI: A total of 44,700 Indians are living in different countries affected by Ebola, a deadly virus that has claimed 932 lives so far. Of this, 300 are CRPF personnel deployed in Liberia for UN peacekeeping operations. Union health minister Harsh Vardhan said this on Wednesday in a written statement to Parliament.

Vardhan said 500 Indians were in the Republic of Guinea, 3,000 in Liberia and 1,200 in Sierra Leone, from where the maximum cases have been reported. Nigeria has a much larger presence of nearly 40,000 Indian citizens. "If the situation worsens, there is a possibility of these people returning home," Vardhan said.

To prevent the disease from spreading to India, the government is taking several precautionary measures — like obtaining details of travellers originating from or transiting through affected countries and tracking them after their arrival, up to their final destination.

Health ministry sources said director general of health services (DGHS) Jagdish Prasad held two meetings on August 1 and 2 to review the situation. Advisories have been issued to the state disease surveillance units to be on alert.

On Tuesday, the health minister held another meeting that was attended by immigration, external affairs ministry, civil aviation, armed forces and World Health Organization (WHO) officials to assess the threat perception to India.

"With many of their personnel deployed in Ebola-hit countries, the armed forces would be suitably advising their staff for appropriate precautions. Soldiers returning to India on leave or otherwise would be tracked and monitored for symptoms," said a senior health ministry official. He said there was no confirmation of any Indian being infected with the virus yet. As a precaution, the government has asked people to defer non-essential travel to that region.

WHO has reported 1,603 cases and 887 deaths till August 4 in four countries — Guinea (485 and 358), Liberia (468 and 255), Sierra Leone (646 and 273) and Nigeria (4 and 1).

Liberian nurses carry the body of an Ebola victim from a house for burial in the Banjor Community on the outskirts of Monrovia.

A northern Indiana town marshal is facing two misdemeanor counts for allegedly stealing panties belonging to his son's live-in girlfriend.
Police charged 59-year-old Millersburg Marshal David Keith Hathaway Wednesday with two misdemeanor counts of criminal conversion. Messages seeking comment were left by The Associated Press for Hathaway at his office and home on Friday.
A probable cause affidavit states the woman and Hathaway's son set up a hidden video camera that showed Hathaway entering their room and sniffing one panty and stealing another. She also says she found another of her panties in Hathaway's safe.
An initial hearing is scheduled for Aug. 15.
A message seeking information about Hathaway's status as town marshal was left Friday by The AP for town council President Jim Winkler.
The following is a release from the State of Indiana:
The Elkhart County Prosecuting Attorney charged David Keith Hathaway, 59, the Marshal of Millersburg, Indiana, with two counts of criminal Conversion, a Class A misdemeanor, in Elkhart Superior Court 6, today; and, a summons will be issued by the Court for his appearance. Conversion is the crime of exerting “unauthorized” control over property of another person.

The Indiana State Police Investigation determined that in October, 2013, and again in February, 2014, Hathaway maintained unauthorized possession of women’s underwear belonging to another, and for an unauthorized purpose. The Office of the Prosecuting Attorney has notified the Millersburg Town Council of the filing of charges.

India building world’s highest railway bridge

Posted by Unknown on Friday, July 11, 2014 | 0 comments | Leave a comment...

Indian engineers are toiling in the Himalayas to build the world’s highest railway bridge which is expected to be 35 metres taller than the Eiffel Tower when completed by 2016.
The arch-shaped steel structure is being constructed over the Chenab River to link sections of the spectacular mountainous region of India’s northern Jammu and Kashmir state.
The bridge is expected to be 359 metres (1,177 feet) high when completed — surpassing the world’s current tallest railway bridge over the Beipanjiang River in China’s Guizhou province, which stands at 275 metres high.
Work on the bridge started in 2002 but safety and feasibility concerns, including the area’s strong winds, saw the project halted in 2008 before being green-lighted again two years later.
The estimated cost of the project, which is being handled by Konkan Railway Corporation, a subsidiary of state-owned Indian Railways, is $92 million.
The bridge will connect Baramulla to Jammu in the Himalayan state with a travel time of six-and-a-half hours, almost half the time it currently takes.
The main arch is being erected using two cable cranes attached on either side of the river which are secured on enormous steel pylons, according to engineers of the project.
The 1,315-metre long bridge will use up to 25,000 tonnes of steel with some material being transported by helicopters due to the tough terrain.

Dhoni in fresh trouble as court issues arrest warrant

Posted by Unknown on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 | 0 comments | Leave a comment...

A court in Andhra Pradesh Tuesday issued an arrest warrant against Indian cricket team captain MS Dhoni for allegedly hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus.
A local court in Anantapur issued the arrest warrant as Dhoni did not appear in the court despite three summons served in the past. It directed police to present Dhoni in the court July 16.
The case relates to a picture on the cover of a magazine.
Business Today in its April 2013 edition had carried the picture. Dhoni was portrayed as Hindu god Vishnu with a sub title “God of Big Deals” and holding products of several companies including a shoe in his hand.
Y Shyam Sunder, a local leader of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), had filed a petition in the court in February this year alleging that the cricketer hurt the sentiments of Hindus by denigrating a Hindu god.
The summons issued by the court to Dhoni on three occasions were returned. The court, which took up the hearing Tuesday, issued the arrest warrant.
Similar petitions against Dhoni were filed in Delhi, Pune and other cities.

Indian officials order Coca-Cola plant to close for using too much water

Posted by Unknown on Saturday, June 21, 2014 | 0 comments | Leave a comment...

Authorities in northern India have ordered the closure of a Coca-Cola bottling plant at the centre of protests that it is extracting too much groundwater, an official said Wednesday.
An anti-pollution official said the Mehdiganj plant in Varanasi in the state of Uttar Pradesh had breached the conditions of its operating licence, prompting the order closure earler this month.
"The plant is closed following our orders," Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board member secretary J.S. Yadav told AFP.
"They have also been asked to take suitable measures to recharge the depleting groundwater level by twice the amount they have extracted.
"Also, the effluents released by the plant contain pollutants beyond the permissible limits."
The plant was also asked to produce a permission certificate from a government agency that regulates ground water use, Yadav said.
The company has appealed the closure order to India's environment court, the National Green Tribunal, he said.
Coca-Cola, the world's largest soft-drinks maker which has consistently denied the allegations, could not immediately be contacted for comment.
The Indian unit of the company hit a hurdle earlier this year when local authorities said they would demolish the plant, claiming it was built on village council land and was "illegal".
The authorities also imposed a 126,000 rupee ($2,000) fine on Hindustan Coca-Cola Company Private Limited, over the land issue.
India is one of Coke's fastest-growing markets thanks to an expanding middle class.
The bottling plant, one of 58 that Atlanta-based Coca-Cola has in India, has been at the centre of protests for years. Demonstrators accuse the company of creating major water shortages through excessive extraction of water and of polluting groundwater and soil.
Coke last year announced the completion of work to expand the Varanasi bottling facility which can produce 600 polyethylene terephthalate bottles a minute.

Six killed in explosion and gas leak at India steel plant

Posted by Unknown on Thursday, June 12, 2014 | 0 comments | Leave a comment...

Six persons, including two Deputy General Managers, were killed and 35 others were affected after a poisonous gas leaked at Steel Authority of India’s Bhilai Plant in Durg district of Chhattisgarh on Thursday.
Steel Minister Narendra Singh Tomar has sought a report on the mishap and is likely to visit Bhilai on Friday. Sources said that carbon monoxide gas leaked through pipes when some work was being taken up in a blast furnace.
Inspector General of Police (Durg Range) Pradeep Gupta said six persons, including two DGMs, were killed in the incident. The injured included CISF personnel, workers and officials of the public sector plant, he said.
All the affected persons have been taken to Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital in Bhilai and the seriously ill have been admitted to ICU, Gupta said.
“We are deeply pained to learn that six employees have lost their lives,” the statement issued by SAIL said.
“As per preliminary information, the main header of Pump House No 2 which supplies water to the Gas Cleaning Plants (GCP) of blast furnaces suddenly ruptured at around 6.10 PM.
“This resulted in sudden loss in water pressure to the GCPs and the blast furnace gas from the scrubbers entered the water pipeline affecting the people attending the breakdown in the pump house and in the nearby area,” the SAIL statement said.
“Plant Management is providing all possible care and support and efforts are on for an early liquidation from the breakdown,” it said.
The Principal Secretary to Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh told CNN-IBN that those affected were getting medical treatment and the situation has been brought under control.
Rajesh Agrawal, General Secretary of Shramic Manch Union, said, “There was a gas leak after a pipe burst at one of the furnaces. We blame the management for the incident, they are cutting costs by compromising on safety. Workers also don’t habitually wear gas masks like they should.”
Vijay Mehral, Chief of communication at Bhilai steel plant, said, “All the people were brought to the hospital immediately and admitted to the ICU. There will be a high level probe into this. We will provide all help to those who are affected.”

Virat Kohli on top in ICC ODI rankings

Virat Kohli
The Indian cricket team dropped a rung to third but Virat Kohli continued to top the batting chart in the latest ICC one-day rankings announced on Wednesday. India lost their second position to Sri Lanka, while Australia maintained their place at the top of the heap.
Sri Lanka’s 3-2 series win over England helped them gain one ratings point to move up to 112, the same ratings points as India. However, when ratings are calculated beyond the decimal point, Angelo Mathews’ side edged out India.
In the individual rankings, Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni remained steady at sixth followed by Shikhar Dhawan at eight spot (a loss of one position). Rohit Sharma entered the top-20 at the the 20th position. Among the bowlers, offspinner Ravindra Jadeja slipped a position to fifth to be only Indian in the top-10.
Elsewhere in the list, offspinners James Tredwell of England and Sachitra Senanayake of Sri Lanka entered the top 20 for the first time at the end of the five-match ODI series between the two sides that finished at Edgbaston on Tuesday.
Sri Lanka claimed the five-match series 3-2 after they sealed the fifth and final ODI with a six-wicket win on Tuesday. Tredwell jumped 18 places to a career-best 12th with 627 ratings points, while Senanayake vaulted 20 places to 13th, with 623 ratings points. Both Tredwell and Senanayake claimed nine wickets in the series. However, Senanayake had a better average of 15.11, while Tredwell’s haul came at an average of 18.44.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s Tillakaratne Dilshan moved up two places to seventh in the rankings for ODI batsmen, in the only positive movement inside the top 10. Dilshan was the highest run-getter in the series, with 222 runs at an average of 44.40.
South Africa batsman AB de Villiers occupies the second place and Australia’s George Bailey holds the third position.
