Mobitel, which started operations in 1993, became a wholly owned subsidiary of SLT in October 2002 – making it 20 years of being Sri Lanka’s National Mobile Service Provider.

Over a two-decade period, Mobitel has achieved many a milestone. In January 2004, the company launched its fully-fledged 2.5G GSM network that is EDGE/GPRS enabled and designed to operate on dual band. In December 2007, the company launched its 3.5G HSPA network - the first Super 3.5G network in South Asia. Further, Mobitel successfully demonstrated HSPA + MIMO technology with down link speed up to 28.8 Mbps and carried out successful trial of 4G/LTE technology with downlink speed exceeding 96 Mbps, for the first time in the South Asian Region. Investments committed to date in the 2.5G/3.5G/4G networks and service offering amounts to over US$ 500mn.

The company continued with its strategy which is positioned around value innovation and customer centricity firmly believing that, it can serve well, by making the best out of the technology being used, distribution systems, product portfolio, services and value added services, with heightened acumen concerning customer needs and interests. The National Mobile Service Provider, Mobitel has further enhanced its broadband experience with the introduction of a new range of Prepaid Monthly Internet Plans. This range of special broadband packages allows pre-paid data downloaders to enjoy extended internet usage at attractive rates.
Pre-paid customers can now enjoy extended data downloads via Mobitel and choose from a range of attractive data packages that suit their budget. Mobitel Pre-Paid Internet Plans is a unique method of gaining access to broadband internet as it ensures value for money and provides flexibility to customers, while also allowing users to enjoy the fastest speeds over Mobitel’s 3G and 4G network.
Mobitel’s Prepaid Internet Plans includes a range of monthly prepaid broadband packages above 1 GB to attract the pre-paid data segment and is designed especially for heavy downloaders opting for prepaid internet connections. These prepaid plans will be available island-wide and can be easily used on any device be it a smart phone, dongle, tab or any 4G compatible device, thus also extending this service to all Mobitel 4G customers.
This newly introduced range of internet packages offer customers nine free data bundles ranging from 10 MB to 28GB. Guaranteeing increased value for money, these packages can be subscribed via SMS, reload, USSD or through the Mobitel website www.mobitel.lk.
Once activated, customers will have access to a list of attractive special offers under the prepaid broadband scheme. If the free bundle has been exhausted by the customer prior to the expiration of the validity period, the customers’ data usage will be charged at Rs. 0.20 per MB.
