Eminem hit lands New Zealand ruling party in court

New Zealand’s ruling National Party is being sued for alleged unauthorised use of rapper Eminem’s song “Lose Yourself” in campaign ads ahead of next Saturday’s general election.
Detroit-based Eminem Publishers said in a statement on Tuesday it had started court proceedings in New Zealand.
“The proceedings stem from allegations that unauthorised use has been made of Eminem’s Grammy and Academy Award winning song, ‘Lose Yourself’, in election campaign advertising run by the National Party,” the statement said.
Lawyer Garry Williams told Fairfax Media it was the owners of the song, not Eminem, taking the action.
The National Party said in a statement it rejected the allegation, saying it purchased the music from a recognised production music supplier and was assured it did not infringe any copyright and was an original work.
“We note that the work in question has been licensed multiple times both in Australia and New Zealand without issue or complaint,” the statement said, referring to three television programmes it had been used on.
“The National Party will be defending this action vigorously.”

New Zealand police sends ‘honey traps’ warning ahead of 2015 World Cup

With cricket’s biggest extravaganza, the ICC Cricket World Cup, scheduled to be played in Australia and New Zealand next year, a potential threat has been unearthed by the Kiwi police.
According to a report published in The New Zealand Herald, the fixers and bookies might use honey traps as a weapon during the tournament to lure them.
“We know they bring in women into the country to fraternise with players. Afterwards, they’ll ask the players to do something and if they refuse they’ll say, ‘Well, see these photographs? They will be with your wife, your neighbours, your parents,” Superintendent Sandra Manderson, police chief for the Cricket World Cup, was quoted as saying in the report.
The report also suggested about a list of match-fixers which has been compiled by the police and anti-corruption investigators in a bid to stop them at the border before the World Cup.
The World Cup will be hosted jointly by Australia and New Zealand and the police is trying its best to depose off possible threats.
Of late, cricket’s image has been tarnished with instances of fixing and spot-fixing. Kiwi cricketer Lou Vincent was the recent victim where he publicly accepted involvement in fixing

New Zealand signs new air services deal with Sri Lanka

New Zealand has signed a new air services agreement with Sri Lanka. Transport Minister Gerry Brownlee said the agreement will enable airlines to offer flights from New Zealand to Sri Lanka and then on to other destinations, with tickets able to be sold for either or both sectors.
“Today’s agreement with Sri Lanka is in addition to 14 new or amended air services agreements recently approved by cabinet,” said Brownlee.
“These agreements help provide New Zealanders with better access to the world, making it easier to travel and do business internationally.”
The minister signed today’s agreement extending “fifth freedom” rights alongside Sri Lanka’s Minister of External Affairs, Gamini Lakshman Peiris.
Fourteen other agreements approved by cabinet include new agreements with Finland, Saudi Arabia, Jamaica, Ethiopia, Togo and Zambia.
“Finnair has already applied to use the new agreement to offer code-share services between Finland and New Zealand, as has Ethiopian Airlines under the new agreement with Ethiopia,” Brownlee said.
The agreement, along with an amendment to our agreement with South Africa, helped pave the way for stronger links in Africa, he said. The amendment with South Africa has doubled passenger capacity to 14 services a week and added capacity for another seven freight services a week.
The agreement with Saudi Arabia followed the new agreements announced in June last year with the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Kuwait. These agreements underpin the government’s Gulf trade strategy.
Amendments to agreements have also been made with Hong Kong, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Norway and Sweden.
The agreement with Hong Kong removed all remaining restrictions on non-stop services between Hong Kong and New Zealand. A memorandum of understanding on code-sharing was also reached with Mongolia.
