A Police Constable (PC) who had allegedly attempted to extort a sum of Rs. 4,000 from young lovers at Perahera Mawatha in Colombo 3, after threatening to prosecute them in Court for indecent behaviour, was today ordered to be remanded till June 19 by a Colombo Court.

In his complaint to the Kollupitiya police, the boyfriend stated that he and his girlfriend visited the Beira Lake near Seemamalakaya every weekend for the past two years.

Producing the suspect before Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage, the police said a person who identified himself as a police officer attached to the Kollupitiya police had accosted the couple when they were in conversation last weekend.

Police further said the suspect had demanded and taken their national identity cards stating that they were behaving in an indecent manner.

Police said the couple were told by the suspect that they would be prosecuted in court for indecent behaviour with a fine of Rs.15,000 unless they gave Rs.4000 to the suspect.

The suspect had fled the scene when the couple refused to give the Rs.4,000 and they informed the incident to a police officer who was in uniform near the Perahera Mawatha. (Lakmal Sooriyagoda)
