AOD Becomes First SL Design Campus at Graduate Fashion Week UK and presents Rukshika in London

AOD - the international design campus that brings in Europe’s top design education to Sri Lanka is known to create graduates that enrich local industries and take them to the international arena.
Recently, a young graduate from AOD became the first SL designer to get selected for the world’s most talked-about graduate show- Graduate Fashion Week UK. Rukshika Fernando, a young fashion designer specialising in lingerie and swimwear design, will be representing SL under the AOD banner with alongside top design schools around the globe.

Speaking about her unique collection that got her on to UK’s glamorous catwalks, Rukshi said that it was created under her new brand ‘Rum Punch’; “My brand is all about the design of custom made swim and resort-wear outfits and complementary accessories that emanate an ‘Island Spirit’. The collection is a result of innovative bonding techniques and has been made using a revolutionary “sew-free” technology for an ultra-smooth finish, whilst also using traditional craft methods such as Sri Lankan batik prints.”

Representing Sri Lankan talent on the catwalks of GFW UK is no small thing. Understanding this, Rukshi is keen to make use of this opportunity to highlight the technological, manufacturing and creative capacity that SL possesses for fashion and apparel; “I would like to show the capability that Sri Lanka has, to both design and manufacture garments using innovative ideas, high tech fabrics and technology, combined with traditional methods create unique high fashion that will deliver value to an international consumer. I am very glad and proud to be in this position and to be selected to represent SL for the first time at GFW. But I am not surprised that AOD to be the first campus from Sri Lanka to get selected by GFW. AOD has truly showed me and many others the pathway to become all-round designers.” Rukshi also went on to say that having been trained by an international faculty that are experts in what they do, has had a huge impact in her ability to design for clienteles as sophisticated as those at GFW UK. “AOD has helped me develop and improve my design skills through the Nothumbria curriculum they offer, whilst giving me many platforms to showcase my talents both at national and international levels.  Linda, Karen and the rest of the lecturers at AOD have always given me their fullest support and I think it’s a place that can do wonders for young designers like me. I would also like thank my employer MAS Holdings, my family and my husband for all their support and encouragement.”

AOD is currently enrolling for Northumbria’s award-winning, 100% internal degrees completed here in Sri Lanka. The 2014 intake is now in progress for degrees in fashion, graphic design, interior design and the newly launched Motion graphics & animation design degree.
