Police say that nine students have been arrested on charges of unruly restrain and the wrongful confinement of the vice-chancellor of the Rajarata University.
Investigations were initially launched to arrest 38 university students on these charges. Meanwhile, all faculties except for the Medical Faculty of the Rajarata University have been temporarily closed as of noon Wednesday until further notice.
According to the Vice-Chancellor of the university, professor Ranjith Wijewardene, the closure was in response to a decision by both the academic and non-academic staff to refrain from attending to their duties.
Prof. Wijewardene added that all students must leave the university premises by 4 p.m. Thursday.
