Sept 12, Colombo: A nursing sector trade union of nurses attached to the state hospitals in Sri Lanka has threatened to strike over political transfers.
The Government Nursing Officers' Association (GNOA) warned the Ministry of Health to revoke political transfers given to the newly appointed nurses or face a strike.
The secretary of GNOA Saman Rathnapriya said that the Ministry has given politically influenced and fraudulent transfers to 35 newly appointed nurses away from the hospitals they were appointed. The union urged the Ministry to cancel those transfers and send them back to the hospitals they were initially appointed.
Rathnapriya said that as a result of these nurses not reporting to the hospitals they were appointed, the long term service nurses who were expecting transfers could not be released.

He said that the union would have to call a strike unless the Ministry rectifies the issue.
