Plagued with allegations of hardware that’s a little too bendy for its newest iPhone and a problematic software update, shares of Apple (AAPL) are bending.
Shares of Apple closed Thursday down $3.88, or 3.8%, to $97.87, breaking the extremely important $100 a share mark. Investors and traders are carefully watching the $100 level since that’s the same level the stock hit in 2012 before beginning a painful roughly 50% decline.
The stock has now lost a staggering $23 billion since the iPhone 6 was released on Sept. 19. The day’s loss in Apple stock exceeds the entire market value of more than half the individual companies in the Standard & Poor’s 500 index — including individual companies such as Macy’s (M) and Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG).
What’s different this time is that there are serious questions about Apple’s once-vaunted quality standards this time. While consumers are used to Apple not being first — for instance following other phone makers with a larger screen — they like to think of Apple’s goods as perfect out of the gate. But suggestions that the iPhone 6 Plus can be bent by hand (or in the front pocket) and widespread reports of connectivity and battery woes caused by the update to the operating system, the popular theory of Apple’s products that they “just work” is under assault.
Shares of Apple are still up sharply this year, by 23%, well ahead of the Standard & Poor’s 500’s roughly 7% gain. But seeing the stock lag following a key launch is not something Apple investors want. The iPhone is the most critical product for Apple so far, accounting for at least half of its stock price, says Trefis.com.
And being the most valuable stock in the S&P 500, a 3% move in the stock can put a massive weight on the entire market, as it is Thursday. Each $1 lost by Apple stock translates into a roughly 0.68 decline by the Standard & Poor’s 500. A $3 decline drags the market down 2 points, not including the ripple effect to other tech companies connected with the iPhone. The S&P 500 is down 25.59 points Thursday to 1972.71.
Of course, Apple products have had problems before. An earlier update to an iPhone would lose connectivity due to a faulty antenna design that founder Steve Jobs was able to do damage control around. But with more scrutiny on Apple, such mishaps are more difficult to scoff off and erode — maybe just a little — Apple’s well-groomed aura of perfection.

The bigger screens but thinner bodies of Apple’s new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus models have come at the cost of rigidity, according to owners who say they bent while being carried in trouser pockets.
A number of users across various forums, sites and Twitter have reported – and pictured – that their phones have become warped after they sat or bent down with them in front and rear trouser pockets.
The reports come just after an insurance company claimed that the new iPhones are the most robust ever – though its tests didn’t include bending.
The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus chassis is milled from a solid piece of aluminium alloy whose composition is secret. The weak area of the phone appears to be around the volume buttons, where the frame is at its thinnest and creates a fulcrum point around which the phone bends. Surprisingly, the screen does not break when the phone bends – though it does if the phone is then bent back to a flat profile.
Apple is not the first to have the problem of a large-screened metal-framed smartphone bending under use. Sony’s Xperia Z1, which had a 5in screen and a metal frame, saw users complaining that they bent in pockets, while Samsung Galaxy S4 users had similar complaints, as did BlackBerry Q10 users.
The exact number of iPhone 6 users affected is unknown. The Guardian found dozens of people on Twitter whose iPhone 6 or 6 Plus had bent – though there are also hundreds more echoing news reports and the pictures put up by those who have been affected.
The amount of force required to bend the smartphone is unlikely to be repeated in all but the skinniest of trousers. Before conducting the test, Lewis Hilsenteger from Unbox Therapy said his 6 Plus showed signs of being bent simply from being in his trouser pocket.
The Guardian’s testing of the phones over the past two weeks has not revealed any tendency towards deformation when normal care is taken.
Apple had not replied to request for comment by the time of publication.
Hilsenteger conducted a similar test with the 5.7in Samsung Galaxy Note 3 phablet, which warped to a lesser extent and then came back into shape due to its primarily plastic construction. The Note 3 is 2.5mm thicker than the iPhone 6 Plus, which is 7mm thick.
‘Bigger and more durable than any before them’
Reports of the phones’ bending comes as SquareTrade, which offers extended warranties on products, concluded that the new iPhones were the most robust yet in its “breakability” rating. The company put the phones through submersion in water, drops and sliding tests.
“Both new iPhones are bigger and more durable than any before them,” the SquareTrade spokesman said in the YouTube video of the company’s testing regime. “The iPhone 6 passed all of our tests with flying colours. The iPhone 6 Plus also did extremely well but it’s so big that it lost points for gripability and size, and didn’t do quiet as well in our drop test.”
A dissembling or “teardown” by repair specialists iFixit showed that Apple has made durability improvements to the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, with rubber gaskets around buttons to help prevent water and dust entering and causing damage. Other manufacturers including Sony and Samsung have made their smartphones including the Xperia Z2 and Galaxy S5 resistant to brief submersion in water. Apple hasn’t made any claims about water resistance for the new iPhones.
Smartphones bending under pressure in the pocket is not a new thing. Phones whose frames are made of metal are most susceptible and noticeable because the metal permanently deforms - rather than rebounding or snapping as plastic does.
‘Weakness of the new iPhone’
Previous iPhones, including the iPhone 4, iPhone 5 and iPhone 5S, have suffered from bending, with users complaining about the problem in 2010, 2012 and last year via Apple’s official internet forums.
But the larger and thinner the smartphone, the more likely it is to be damaged by being carried in the pocket under tension.
“In material bending, larger cross-sectional areas [thickness x width] and shorter lengths make things stronger - you can’t easily bend a cube - while the opposite makes things very easy to bend – paper is easily folded,” Jeremy Irons, a design engineer at Creative Engineering explained to Gizmodo. “The increased length and decreased thickness contribute to the weakness of the new iPhone. Strength is proportionally related to length, but strength is affected much more by changes in thickness.”
The thinner and larger the phones get the more susceptible to damage they are likely to be, regardless of how strong the materials used in the phones to reinforce them. Being thin makes large phones more pocketable, but users need to think about the stress and strain in tight pockets as they sit down, regardless of whether they carry them in the back or front pockets.

Apple has sold more than 10 million units of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, setting a new record for the company and meeting analysts’ optimistic predictions.
This means that that the company continues its record-breaking streak of opening weekend sales, topping last year’s figure of nine million iPhones sold for the 5s and 5c.
Analysts have been predicted sales from around 7 million to the low teens, with Barclay’s Ben Reitzes commenting earlier this week that “anything above 10mm units should be considered a positive surprise”.
The figures will be particularly impressive as unlike with last year’s launch sales figures for the 6 and 6 Plus do not include China, the phone company’s second largest market by revenue. (The devices are still awaiting a crucial licence in China, creating a thriving grey market for the devices).
Both the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have larger screens than previous devices (4.7-inches and 5.5-inches respectively) and although Apple has not broken down the sales figures by model, it’s thought that the smaller 6 is out-selling the 6 Plus by a significant margin.
Apple’s full line-up of phone now comprise the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 5s and 5c – a relatively cheaper plastic model that the company did not update in its most recent launch, instead choosing to lower the cost (often free with a contract) in order to target less affluent customers.
Although Android still dominates the global smartphone market, the iPhone continues to be the most popular single device in many developed countries with 42 per cent market share in the US. The iPhone also continues to be Apple’s main money spinner, providing around 70 per cent of the company’s profit.

The iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus are bigger than their predecessors in more ways than one.
The devices, which boast larger screens, are so popular since their unveiling last week that they have broken all iPhone pre-order sales records.
Apple sold a record 4 million iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus smartphones on Friday, the first day that the new iGadgets were available for pre-order, the company said Monday.
Demand for the new iPhones was so high that the iPhone 6 Plus sold out within hours. While many people who pre-ordered the iPhone 6 will get them this Friday, many others won’t get their iPhones delivered until next month.
“Demand for the new iPhones exceeds the initial pre-order supply,” Apple said in a statement.
The company noted that an additional supply of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus smartphones will be made available to walk-in customers on Friday Sept. 19, beginning at 8:00 a.m. local time at Apple stores.
People have already begun camping outside Apple Stores around the world to be among the first to get their hands on one of the new iPhones.
This is the first year that Apple announced how many iPhones it sold in the first day — rather than in the first weekend. A year ago, Apple said it sold 9 million iPhone 5S and 5C smartphones in the first weekend.
What makes the iPhone so hot, aside from having the latest Apple product, is the larger screen sizes.
The iPhone 6 is 4.7 inches, while the iPhone 6 Plus measures 5.5 inches diagonally, giving Samsung, which has dominated the giant phone market, some competition.
The iPhones are also packed with new features, including “reachability.” With a double touch, the display can slide down so users can reach “anything” at the top of the phone, an ideal feature for multitasking.
Apple Pay, the company’s digital wallet that is aiming to be a credit card killer, will also be supported on the new iPhones.

Apple on Tuesday unveiled two new versions of the iPhone, boosting the screen size of the iconic smartphone to 4.7 and 5.5 inches.
Apple senior vice president Phil Schiller, speaking in Cupertino, California, said the new iPhones were “simply stunning” with polarized glass displays and bodies that are “thinner than ever before.”
“These are the best phones ever made,” Schiller said, as he described the new devices at a major set-piece event streamed live online.
The new iPhone 6 will start at the same price of existing iPhones at $199 for US customers while the iPhone 6 Plus will be at $299 with a two-year contract.
Schiller said the devices would be available in at least 115 countries by the end of the year.
Apple will cut the price of existing iPhone 5s and 5c with the launch.
Apple’s move, expanding the latest iPhone with a four-inch screen, comes as consumers are switching to handsets with bigger displays to watch videos and browse the Internet.
Observers say the timing is right for Apple to introduce a generation of iPhone 6 models with screen sizes stretched to tap into users’ love for “phablets” that combine the features of smartphones and tablets.
The Cupertino giant has also revealed pricing and availability for the iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus. The smartphones go on pre-order from September 12, while iOS 8 will roll out on September 17. The phones will release on September 19.
The iPhone 6 (on a 2-year contract) will be priced at $199 for 16GB, $299 for 64GB, $399 for 128GB. The iPhone 6 Plus (on a 2-year contract) will be priced at $299 for 16GB, $399 for 64GB, and $499 for for 128GB.

It seems nothing is going Apple’s way when it comes to the next iPhone’s production. A recent report suggested that the company might face component yield issues in an attempt to meet the thin form factor of the iPhone 6.
Now, KGI Securities’ analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims that due to production issues, the launch of the alleged larger iPhone 6 variant, believed to be the 5.5-inch model, may be delayed to next year. He adds that in any case the phone is indeed launched in October, it is likely be available in limited quantities.
MacRumors quotes Kuo who noted, “Production bottlenecks on 4.7-inch iPhone 6 centre on the yield rate of in-cell touch panel and metal casing. As in-cell touch panel becomes larger in size, the edge of the panel may become insensitive to touch. Meanwhile, under new manufacturing process for the iPhone 6 metal casing, colour unevenness is an issue.”
Notably, this is not the first case of yield issues reported for the long-rumoured 5.5-inch iPhone 6 variant. Back in May, a report suggested that the use of costly sapphire as a display material, waslimiting the production of the alleged iPhone 6 with 5.5-inch display.
Last week, a report tipped that Apple might introduce a new haptic feedback technology in its next generation iPhone devices, while another leak suggested that the company had almost doubled orders for the iPhone 6 when compared to the iPhone 5.
Earlier this month, a report revealed a September 25 (Thursday) availability date for the alleged 4.7- and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 models, which is not in line with Apple’s traditional Friday launch, while also claiming that the name of the larger 5.5-inch iPhone 6 variant will be iPhone Air.

Another day and another iPhone 6 rumour. This time a report out of China details an astonishing new launch date for the next iPhone from Apple, ahead of most dates in previous leaks. The report is accompanied with purported pricing details, as well as the name of the anticipated larger 5.5-inch iPhone 6 variant – iPhone Air.
The report citing industry sources claims Apple will unveil the iPhone 6 on September 15, which falls on a Monday, while retail availability will begin on September 25, which falls on a Thursday.
Apple traditionally starts sales of new iPhone models on a Friday to capture the weekend crowd, so the dates seem a little fishy. Previous leaks had indicated a more credible launch date of September 19, which happens to be Friday.
According to the report, China will also be amongst the first countries to receive the iPhone. The report also details the pricing, which matches previous leaks, claiming the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 (32GB) will cost CNY 5,288 , while the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 (16GB) will be priced at CNY 5,998 . This would also imply the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 (32GB) is cheaper than the current 4-inch iPhone 5s (16GB), which costs CNY 5,300.
The same report claims the much-rumoured 5.5-inch iPhone 6 variant will be called the iPhone Air, following the naming scheme of the latest, largest iPad. The report adds that China Mobile and China Unicom, Apple’s carriers in the country, have begun field testing the iPhone 6 on their networks.
Recently, Japanese daily Nikkei had posted two alleged images of the rumoured 4.7-inch iPhone 6 dummy model, side by side with an iPhone 5s. The leaked images corroborate what’s has been widely expected based on earlier leaks, that the next iPhone will house the power button on the right panel of the device, instead on the top panel seen on current iPhone models. It also seen to feature the Touch ID sensor.
Previously, another Chinese report indicated the alleged 5.5-inch iPhone 6 variant will feature a 128GB storage variant. The report further claims that the 128GB storage variant will be limited to the bigger variant of the rumoured iPhone 6, and the alleged 4.7-inch iPhone 6 will offer the conventional 64GB as its maximum storage variant, while the 16GB variant will be dumped for both models.
An earlier report citing a research note from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also suggested that the alleged 5.5-inch iPhone 6 would sport OIS (optical image stabilisation) for the rear camera. The report further claimed that the alleged 4.7-inch iPhone 6 will not come with OIS.
The Cupertino-based company has also been rumoured to be testing a higher screen resolution of 960×1704 pixels on at least one of the two iPhone models likely to debut this year.

Looks like the next iPhone might be able to measure temperature, air pressure, and altitude, with a new report tipping addition of a new barometer sensor into the handset.
Apple’s next iPhone, believed to be dubbed the iPhone 6, has been in headlines with numerous leaks tipping details about the unannounced handset’s design and display size. However, this is the first time we have heard details of the alleged iPhone 6′s new sensor system.
The details about the possible presence of a new sensor on the anticipated iPhone 6 come via references found in Xcode 6 and iOS 8, which are the latest iPhone software developer kit (SDK) and operating system. The report claims that the software includes updated CoreMotion APIs, which include reference of the new altitude measuring capabilities. A 9to5mac report claims that there are a number of apps in the App Store which can track altitude and one of them is even listed on the company’s Your Verse section.
Notably, the reference of the new altitude measuring capabilities in Xcode 6 and iOS 8 is a new framework that is dedicated to altitude tracking. The report, citing a few developers, claims that this framework requires a new Apple hardware.
The report informs the App Store currently comes with apps that use the iOS device’s inbuilt GPS and motion chips to determine altitude; however, a barometer sensor could get more accurate data and could be quick to load data, thanks to the dedicated chip.
A developer from FutureTap, as cited by 9to5mac, tested the new framework on an iPhone 5s, which in result confirmed that the device [iPhone 5s] did not support the altitude changes.
The report speculates that the new sensor could be a part of, and be powered by, the alleged iPhone 6′s M8 motion co-processor that’s said to be a part of the expected A8 processor rumoured to debuton the alleged iPhone 6 and be designed for improved efficiency and battery life.

Apple plans to release its new iPhone in August, a month earlier than expected, after sales were hit by new big-screen models from its rivals, a major Taiwanese newspaper reported Friday, citing supply chain sources.
The Economic Daily News quoted unnamed sources as saying Apple had acquired parts from various Taiwanese suppliers such as wafer maker Visual Photonics Epitaxy Co and Largan Precision, a leading maker of lenses used in mobile phones, for the handset expected to be called iPhone 6.
Taiwanese electronics contract makers including Foxconn and Pegatron have also been notified by Apple to start their assembly lines for the new handsets likely around late June, said the mass-circulation national newspaper.
US-based Apple has decided to roll out the 4.7-inch screen version of the new model in August, a month early, as recent sales have been affected by the launch of bigger-screen phones from rivals such as South Korean giant Samsung and Taiwan’s HTC, the report said.
A high-end variant of the iPhone 6 with a 5.5 or 5.6-inch screen will still be unveiled in September as previously planned, it said, adding that Apple expected total sales of 80 million units for both versions.
Japan’s Nikkei business daily reported in March that Apple would release its next iPhone in September, its latest salvo in the smartphone wars where it has lost global market share to rivals such as Samsung.
Apple released its current iPhone 5 in September 2012 and newer versions in the series last year.
A number of top Taiwanese electronics companies have been behind the production of the iPhone series by supplying components or assembling the handsets.
The latest to come onboard is the world’s biggest contract chip maker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), which reportedly started producing chips for the next iPhone in February.
That news fed rumours that Apple is reducing its reliance for parts on Samsung, its main competitor in the mobile phone market and a bitter rival with which it is contesting several copyright court battles globally.
The companies named in the Economic Daily News report declined to comment.
