Viber introduces free video calling for mobile

Viber, the fast-growing communications app with more than 400 million users worldwide, has launched an update to its iOS and Android apps that brings video calling to mobile.
The Viber 5.0 update allows iOS and Android users to place free video calls with other Viber users anywhere in the world. The feature works cross-platform, so users on iOS can communicate with those on Android and vice versa. Both sets of users can also send video communications to PCs.
Viber is a fierce Skype competitor, offering users the ability to communicate via voice, text, and video. In February, Rakuten, a Japan-based e-commerce company, announced it had acquired Viber for $900 million. At that time, Viber said it had 300 million users — which means meaning it has added 100 million new users in the last seven months.
In addition to adding video calls, Viber now includes QR code scanning for quickly adding contacts. On the iOS side, Viber has also included improvements to forwarding photo messages. And on Android, it has refreshed the design.

mCouple: A brand new app that can expose a cheating partner

Posted by Unknown on Saturday, August 9, 2014 | 0 comments | Leave a comment...

Have a doubt that your husband is having an extramarital affair? Get this app and track every detail of his digital life.
Developed by London-based firm mSpy, mCouple has to be downloaded strictly with consent from the partner.

The app gives you access to your partner's every call, text and e-mail.
It also shows any activity on Skype and Facebook as well as pictures and videos taken or shared using your partner's smartphone.
Users can even record their partner's mobile phone conversations and track movements using GPS technology.
Currently, the firm targets parents who want to keep a vigil on their children or offices monitoring their staff.
"But the app can be used to expose love cheats too," its developers said.

New Facebook app forces you to trade messages

Posted by Unknown on Tuesday, June 17, 2014 | 0 comments | Leave a comment...

Facebook has launched a Snapchat-like mobile app that lets users trade ephemeral photo- and video-based messages that disappear after a few seconds.
With the new app, called Slingshot, you can’t view an incoming message until you respond with a photo or video of your own. That’s right: There can be no passive users on Slingshot, which is basically forcing its community to trade photos and video clips, quid pro quo, like schoolkids exchanging stickers or lunchbox snacks.
“With Slingshot, we wanted to build something where everybody is a creator and nobody is just a spectator,” its creators said Tuesday in a blog post announcing the app. “When everyone participates, there’s less pressure, more creativity and even the little things in life can turn into awesome shared experiences.”
Judging by initial reaction, however, at least some users may find this stricture a little annoying.
It’s frustrating, not exciting when a friend sends you a shot and you can’t immediately view it,” wrote Ellis Hamburger in tech-news site The Verge. “Slingshot is a new and strange example of a messaging app that raises barriers instead of tearing them down, and increases the friction to viewing a friend’s photo instead of reducing it.”
In fairness, the app is designed not for sending urgent information — we have texting or even phone calls for that — but for exchanging spontaneous moments or snippets of creativity.
Slingshot, which leaked briefly last week before Facebook pulled it offline, is the social networking giant’s latest attempt to compete with Snapchat, a rival messaging app that is popular with teens and young adults.
Snapchat is estimated to have more than 30 million users and reportedly turned down a $3 billion acquisition offer from Facebook last fall. Facebook later went on to buy WhatsApp, a messaging app that’s especially widespread overseas.
Slingshot succeeds Poke, a messaging app that Facebook launched in 2012 and shut down last month after it failed to gain traction with users.
Slingshot messages are photo and video only, although users can superimpose bits of text on the images. Like Snapchat (and Poke), Slingshot messages self-destruct after a few seconds unless the user adjusts his or her phone settings to save them.
“Photos and videos that don’t stick around forever allow for sharing that’s more expressive, raw and spontaneous. We can connect the same way we like to live: in the moment,” Facebook said in its post, which takes the unusual step of crediting its competitor.
“We’ve enjoyed using Snapchat to send each other ephemeral messages and expect there to be a variety of apps that explore this new way of sharing,” it said.
Unlike Snapchat, Slingshot allows users to send, or “sling,” messages to multiple friends at once. A push notification will appear when somebody sends you something.

Android 4.4.3 now available to all Google Play Edition phones

T-Mobile was the first to unleash the official Android 4.4.3 KitKat update on its Nexus (4,5,7) lineup. Then Motorola begun updating the Moto X, Moto G and Moto E.
Today the entire Google Play Edition phone lineup has been treated to Android 4.4.3 KitKat. The OTA firmware is available for HTC One, HTC One (M8), Samsung Galaxy S4 and Sony Xperia Z Ultra. There is no info on the LG G Pad 8.3 slate, but we bet it will be getting it very soon if not already.
The owners of Nexus devices outside T-Mobile are still waiting on the over-the-air update although Google has already release the official factory images. We guess Google should take care of this soon too.
Android 4.4.3 is a minor update bringing a refreshed UI in the Phone app, plus critical bug fixes, stability and performance improvements.

Gmail Android app first to hit one billion installations

Posted by Unknown on Sunday, May 18, 2014 | 0 comments | Leave a comment...

Google’s Gmail app has become the first standalone smartphone app to pass one billion installations on Android devices.
The milestone, announced by Sundar Pichai, Google’s head of Android, was crossed sometime last week; the Google Play Store ranks apps by downloads in different ranges and the Gmail Android app ticked over into the one to five billion bracket.
The figure excludes updates, so there is no double-counting when an update is issued. And the Google Play services app is disqualified from the counting, as it is required as part of the Google Play Store.
The Gmail app is installed by default on all Google Android devices as part of Google’s licensing, which covers most of the Android software-powered tablets, smartphones and other devices available outside China. It is updated automatically when the device connects to the Google Play store.
Amazon’s Kindle Fire range of Android devices and Microsoft’s Nokia X smartphones do not come with Gmail installed as default, nor is it possible to download the Gmail app through their app stores. Nor are there any figures for downloads of the Gmail app for Apple’s iPhone and iPad.
Several groups of apps, such as Outfit7’s range of Talking Friends apps, have already passed the one billion downloads milestone, but no one individual app has been downloaded 1bn times on its own before. The Angry Birds collection of games broke one billion downloads in 2012.
Gmail’s billion downloads reinforces data on how many Google-powered Android devices have been sold, with Google’s executives saying that more than one billion Android device activations were passed last year.
It also indicates how important Google’s agreements to have its apps installed by default are in fuelling downloads, and encouraging use of its services.
As it stands, manufacturers cannot have access to Google’s Play Store without installing Google’s suite of apps and placing them in a prominent position.
