British Airways today announced that it will cease its operations onwards to Colombo from March 28 next year.
Services to Male will re-commence for winter 2015, but British Airways will cease to operate flights onwards to Colombo.
With SriLankan Airlines recently joining oneworld, customers in Sri Lanka will still be able to enjoy the benefits of British Airways’ extensive network of flights to Europe and North America, connecting on from the direct SriLankan Airlines flight to London Heathrow.
Christopher Fordyce, Regional Commercial Manager, British Airways, South Asia, said, “The decision to suspend flights between Colombo and London has been a difficult one to make. We constantly assess all our global routes and take appropriate steps, as needed. The Colombo route is not making a profitable contribution to our business and we are unable to sustain it.
“British Airways will continue flying between London Gatwick and Male, however, the service will be operational only during the winter schedule to cater to the high leisure travel demand.”
British Airways is in the process of contacting all affected customers, who will be offered a full refund. The premium airline is also in the process of seeking out solutions to assist as many customers as possible in making alternative arrangements. Customers who have booked through travel agents may contact their agents directly.
British Airways would like to apologise to the customers affected by these changes and would like to thank the airport authorities, local government, tourist organisations and people of Sri Lanka for their support.

Qatar Airways is preparing to have a strong presence at the 2014 Farnborough Air Show, taking place this week in Southern England, when it will fly the A350 aircraft with Qatar Airways livery for the first time at a flying display in a European Air Show.
The A350, for which Qatar Airways is the global launch customer, will make its debut alongside two other major aircraft in the fleet. It is scheduled to join the airline’s fleet at the end of this year.
Overall, Qatar Airways will have on display at Farnborough an Airbus A350, A320 and a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The A350 will feature in the flying display, while the latter two will be on static display.
Commenting on the three aircraft on display at Farnborough, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker said: “Qatar Airways is determined to bring the best quality flying experience to its passengers and those at the 2014 Farnborough Air Show will get a flavour of what is to come. These aircraft symbolise our dynamic growth and our constant focus on world-class quality.
“The Farnborough Air Show has been a long-standing, key event on Qatar Airways’ calendar, and we look forward to a highly successful week.”
Static displays of military and civilian aircraft will be a key feature of the show as well as the hallmark afternoon flying programme in which the A350 is scheduled to participate.
Now in its advanced flight test programme phase, the efficient A350 XWB airliners are scheduled to enter into commercial service in the fourth quarter of 2014. Qatar Airways has ordered 80 aircraft to date, leaning towards the larger A350-900 and A350-1000 models, which better suit its business model and passenger requirements.
The A350 XWB is a family of mid-sized wide-body airliners designed to enhance fuel, operating costs and environmental efficiencies during medium-to-long haul airline operations. Featuring the very latest in aerodynamics, design and advanced technologies, these highly efficient aircraft provide better fuel efficiency of up to 25 percent. Over 70 percent of the A350 XWB’s weight-efficient airframe is made from advanced materials combining composites (53 percent), titanium and advanced aluminium alloys. The aircraft’s innovative all-new Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) fuselage results in lower fuel burn as well as easier maintenance.
The 787 Dreamliner at the Show has a two-cabin configuration, comprising of 22 seats in Business Class and 232 Economy Class seats with a high standard of comfort on board, including individual 10.5 inch television screens for all Economy Class seats and a full complimentary food and beverage service.
The A320-200 has 12 Business Class seats, 132 Economy Class seats and on-demand audio video at every seat. Qatar Airways is in the middle of a major investment programme upgrading its A320 aircraft to include a 180-degree lie flat-bed, new 15.4 inch smart monitors and touch-screen remote control handsets as well as power, USB ports and connectivity for smart devices. The enhanced A320 aircraft will operate on the Vienna, Tunis, Milan, Rome, Geneva and Maldives routes.
Qatar Airways, the State of Qatar’s national airline, has seen rapid growth in just 17 years of operation, to the point where today it is flying a modern fleet of 134 aircraft to 144 key business and leisure destinations across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific, North America and South America.

‘Tourism and Community Development’ is the theme of this year’s World Tourism Day (WTD).
The theme underscores the potential of tourism to promote opportunities for communities around the world, as well as the role that community engagement has in advancing sustainable tourism development.
The official celebrations will be hosted by Mexico in the city of Guadalajara (27 September). This year’s WTD theme is ideally timed to contribute to the debate on tourism’s contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the UN development blueprint after 2015, which places a high priority on local participation. “Each time we travel, use local transport at a destination or buy products from a local market, we are contributing to a long value chain that creates jobs, provides livelihoods, empowers local communities, and ultimately brings in new opportunities for a better future,” said UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai, in his official WTD message. “Tourism can only prosper if it engages the local population by contributing to social values such as participation, education and enhanced local governance. At the same time, there can be no real tourism development if such development damages in any way the values and the culture of host communities or if the socio-economic benefits generated by the tourism sector do not trickle down to the community level.”
The official celebrations to be held in Guadalajara, Mexico, include a high-level think tank bringing together ministers, development experts and key tourism representatives to address the relevance of a community based tourism approach as conducive to sustainable development. The think tank will be moderated by news anchor Gabriela FrÃas of CNN International, the WTD 2014 global media partner.

Sri Lanka is expected to post the strongest economic growth in South Asia in 2014, hitting 7.2%, according to a Word Bank’s latest report on Thursday.
According to the report, Sri Lanka’s annual growth is forecast to remain broadly stable at 7.2% in 2014, and to moderate to about 6.9% in 2015 and 6.7% in 2016, higher than estimates of medium-term potential growth for the country.
The estimates are behind the Central Bank’s projection of a 7.8% growth in 2014 and an 8% growth for 2015 and beyond.
Sri Lanka’s annual growth pace picked up to 7.3% in 2013 from 6.3% in 2012, boosted by services, stronger manufacturing activity, robust agricultural growth and a pickup in domestic demand partly due to the easing of monetary policy.
As demand from the Euro area and the United States improved in 2-H of 2013, exports from Sri Lanka grew rapidly, the World Bank noted.
Despite acceleration in growth, Sri Lanka’s inflation fell from 6.7% in October 2013 to 3.2% in May this year, the report noted. Sri Lanka’s deficit has also fallen in recent years due to tight monetary policies.
With the exception of Nepal and the Maldives, all countries in South Asia are faced with significant revenue shortfalls, the report said.
According to the World Bank, GDP growth in South Asia in 2014 will be at 5.3%, and it will rise to 5.9% in 2015 and 6.3% in 2016.
The report said most of the acceleration was localised in India, supported by a gradual pickup of domestic investment and rising global demand.
India will grow at 5.3% in 2014 and the World Bank projected India’s GDP to grow at 6.3% in 2015 and 2016 and 6.6% for 2016-17.
While credit growth is slowing in South Asia, domestic financial risks remain as non-performing loans (NPLs) remain an ongoing concern, the World Bank report said. Sri Lanka has the second lowest NPLs as a share of total loans in South Asia.
According to the global lender, South Asian countries are vulnerable to political developments in Ukraine and Russia that could result in tighter international Crude Oil supplies, given the reliance of South Asia on imported Crude Oil. (Live Trading News)

Singer Jennifer Lopez aka JLo, who was supposed to perform the official song of this year’s World Cup at the opening ceremony this week has pulled out.
“Regretfully Jennifer Lopez will not be attending this year’s World Cup opening ceremonies,” her rep told foreign media in a statement late Sunday night.
Lopez teamed up with rapper Pitbull and Brazilian star Claudia Leitte to record Brazil 2014′s official song, “We Are One (Ola Ola).”
The trio was slated to perform at the tournament’s opening ceremony ahead of the host’s first match with Croatia on Sao Paulo on Thursday.
The World Cup song has been a tradition since the 1966 World Cup in England, when a song dedicated to tournament mascot, a lion named “World Cup Willie” was released.
Four years ago, it was Shakira telling the world to “Waka Waka” ahead of South Africa 2010.
Soon after the song was released, Pit Bull, who has previously worked with the likes of Christina Aguilera and Enrique Iglesias, spoke of his joy at being involved in the project.
“I’m honored to join Jennifer Lopez and Claudia Leitte at the FIFA World Cup to bring the world together,” said Pitbull. “I truly believe that this great game and the power of music will help unify us, because we are best when we are one.”
