A brothel that was functioning under the guise of a restaurant has been raided by the Matara Division of the Crimes Eradication Unit. According to the police, the raid was carried out based on a search warrant obtained from the courts.
Police added that the owner and two other women were arrested, subsequent to the raid. The suspects have been identified as residents of Thihagoda, Katunayake and Sevanagala.

A tense situation prevailed in the Ruhuna University a short while ago when some residents supporting the ‘Deyata Kirula Exhibition’ forcibly entered the university.
Several residents had gathered opposite the university along the Matara- Kataragama main road and shouted out slogans in support of the Deyata Kirula. Some of them had forcibly entered the university and one student was injured in a clash.
Sources said the police managed to bring the situation under control and removed the outsiders from the university premises but they continued to block the main road. (Krishan Jeewaka Jayaruk)

Passenger bus services will commence from today to Matara on Sri Lanka's Southern Expressways, Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) authorities said.
Manager of Matara Bus Depot Lasantha Sanjeeva has said that the service has been initiated in response to a proposal made by the Matara District parliamentarian and Deputy Minister of Post Sanath Jayasuriya.
According to the authorities, a bus will leave from Maharagama to Matara at every 20 minutes and 10 SLTB buses have been deployed for the service.
Both the private and SLTB buses will operate on the Expressway according to a timetable.

The Government has decided to postpone the opening of the Galle -- Matara section of the Southern Expressway by another month. This section was to be commissioned on January 31 by the President.
This move has been prompted by the delay in completing the access point from Nupe Junction in Matara to Godagama and the landscaping of the stretch of land from Pinnaduwa to Godagama.
Presidential coordinator Ven. Getamanne Gunanada Thera said the opening was scheduled to take place during the first week of March this year.
Government sources indicate that this section of the Southern Expressway would be commissioned before the elections to the Southern Provincial Council.
Meanwhile the delay had attracted a large number of peacocks to this section of the highway and the peacocks entertain the visitors with a colourful dance, which is a wonderful sight for tired eyes.

Matara Magistrates courts had issued an order to arrest Mangala Samaraweera, Sudath Chandrasekara and nine others.
This order had been issued that according to Police reports that were submitted in the clash between two factions of the United National party on the 5th of this month during the peace protest walk.
In the meantime the Court had ordered 33 persons who were arrested to be rearrested until the 21st of this month when they were produced before the Magistrate.
