Khuram Shaikh murder: Verdicts delivered (Update)

The trial on the murder of British national Khuram Shaikh and the gang-rape of his Russian girlfriend Victoria Alexandrovna has concluded.
The defendants were indicted of 17 charges, and the trial was held over 33 court dates. Four of the six defendants, including the chairman of the Tangalle Pradeshiya Sabha Sampath Vidanapathirana, were sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for the murder of Khuram Shaikh.
According to our court correspondent, sentences were handed down to the convicts based on all charges, including rape, to be served in a period of 20 years.
The fifth and sixth defendants meanwhile have been acquitted.
Compensation of Rs. 3 million has also been ordered to be paid to the rape victim.
