Petition against Dialog Telecom

Despite repeated requests from subscribers, Dialog continues to send on average two (2) unsolicited promotional SMS texts (spam) to its subscribers. Requests to Customer Care hotline results in the representative claiming to 'inactivate' the service, only to be reactivated the following day. A previously available self-deactivation feature (the SMS code PROMO OFF) too, has been quietly removed.
Unlike with email, many subscribers rely on SMS not just to keep in touch with family but also to receive important notifications from work schedules and electronic banking. This means they often need to interrupt what they do to check new message notifications. If we assume 1 million subscribers and approximately 15 seconds wasted per such spam SMS, your service is wasting on average a quarter million man-hours of Sri Lankans every month.
As subscribers who are already paying for your services, we do not appreciate our personal contact information being used for revenue generation via advertising. We demand the right to quickly and easily opt out of such programs and to have our contact information be considered private and confidential.
