Dialog Axiata PLC – Sri Lanka’s leading mobile telecommunication provider – yesterday announced that it will support the EC-Council Cyber Security Summit 2014 as the official mobile partner.
The partnership is for the second consecutive year.

Titled ‘EC-Council Cyber Security Summit 2014’, the event is co-organised by CICRA Consultancies Ltd. – Sri Lanka’s pioneering cyber security training and consultancy provider – and the Daily FT.
Dialog Axiata’s Chief Technology Officer, Pradeep De Almeida, said: “We are delighted to join hands with CICRA and the Daily FT for a second year running to partner the Cyber Security Summit.”
“This is an important forum in the corporate agenda, as the burgeoning digital products, services and applications realm presents numerous opportunities and challenges to individuals and business alike. Speaking at the ceremony, CICRA Director/CEO Boshan Dayaratne said that Cyber Security Summit 2013 was a tremendous success and he expected that this year’s summit to create more awareness amongst the corporates on cyber security risks and how to mitigate those perils.
“As cyber security threats skyrocket and not even a day passes by without a cyber-security breach on a corporate or a government entity on its IT infrastructure, we are pleased to see that Dialog has joined hands with ‘EC-Council Cyber Security Summit 2014’ in Sri Lanka,” Dayaratne said.
The main objective of the summit is to create awareness on the importance of cyber security and to provide top officers in the Government, top private sector leaders, IT professionals with the best practices in acquiring, implementing, managing and measuring information security postures of their organisations and countermeasures.
The summit will also highlight latest flaws in information security that affects the global community including the corporations and the governments. Discussions and presentations will revolve around some of the most malicious attacks and potential threats surrounding the security field.

Despite repeated requests from subscribers, Dialog continues to send on average two (2) unsolicited promotional SMS texts (spam) to its subscribers. Requests to Customer Care hotline results in the representative claiming to 'inactivate' the service, only to be reactivated the following day. A previously available self-deactivation feature (the SMS code PROMO OFF) too, has been quietly removed.
Unlike with email, many subscribers rely on SMS not just to keep in touch with family but also to receive important notifications from work schedules and electronic banking. This means they often need to interrupt what they do to check new message notifications. If we assume 1 million subscribers and approximately 15 seconds wasted per such spam SMS, your service is wasting on average a quarter million man-hours of Sri Lankans every month.
As subscribers who are already paying for your services, we do not appreciate our personal contact information being used for revenue generation via advertising. We demand the right to quickly and easily opt out of such programs and to have our contact information be considered private and confidential.

According to unconfirmed reports being received Dialog TV is to switch satellites from Intelsat-12 to ChinaSat-12 aka SupremeSat-1. Yes, this is widely known as Sri Lanka's first satellite.
Although we are unable to confirm this development and the time frame within which Dialog TV will carry out this switch, we see the following reasons as to why Dialog TV maybe even considering this move.
- Low cost of transponders compared to European/American operated satellites - This is actually one of the major reasons that Indian DTH operators are more cost effective, since almost all use Indian satellites.
- Priority given to locals when allocating transponder space - One of the reasons that Dialog TV maybe unable to expand to a new transponder could be lack of free transponders on Intelsat-12.
However one major drawback could be the fact that Dialog TV will have to reposition all antenna's to the new position which means that Dialog TV should operate from both satellites used until all subscribers are switched to the new position.
It's certain that a move of this nature will benefit both Dialog TV & subscribers in the long term.
