Russia seeks to ban high heels for women

The opposition lawmaker has introduced the bill that would ban certain types of sneakers, ballet flats and high heels in the Customs Union, due to the health risks posed to the user.
State Duma Deputy Oleg Mikheyev of the A Just Russia party, sent a letter to Viktor Khristenko, the chief economist of the Customs Union - comprising of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan - asking him to add orthopedic regulations codes.
Mikheyev blamed heelless footwear such as sneakers, ballet slippers and stilettos for various foot disorders.
Canvas sneakers also seem to affect the battle readiness of the Russian Army, with young men being drafted into service for the first time this year, because the projects committee could not find a sufficient number of recruits.
“In the past, women suffered from uncomfortable shoes, because most of the complications were caused by high heels. Now, the risk group also includes men,” Mikheyev said.
Orthopaedic Surgeon Vladimir Khoroshev agreed that high heels and flats could cause health problems, such as memory loss and bone problems.
